Ok, now many of you may not have much experience with portfolios and possibly many of you may not
have much understanding of what they are, what they do, and why they are needed. This page is here
to provide a brief explenation of the concept of a portfolio and why it can do for you and why they
are needed. This page is a summary of a longer peice on the concept written by Dr. Randy Brooks of
Millikin University and can be found here
Dr. Brooks writes "an effective web portfolio is not just a gathering of digitial exhibits; it is a carefully designed online experience of exhibits. It builds on principles of web design.. and is a carefully designed rhetorical act, because it is the portfolio's guiding elements--the introduction, the exhibit annotations, the shared reflection--which help the reader understand the context of each exhibit and the over all significance of the portfolio." This idea of reflection is the central idea surrounding the portfolio. Think of a portfolio as a chance to showcase something you have accomplished. Now there isn't much use to tell someone something unless you are going to give the reader the understanding to go along with it. This is where reflection occurs. Reflection is the process of connecting the artifacts to a goal, a specific learning goal. This reflection shold contain an introduction, a personal connection, and a description of how what you learned fits in wit whih your own personal goals from past or future. You know this artifact matters, so proove it to the world and in the process you are giving them a peice of your story of "who you are," "how can I know," and "what should you do." |
